The annoying ringing of the alarmclock broke Harm out of his dreams. He rolled over to turn off the alarm only to find Mac already being wide awake.
"Morning, sleepyhead." she smiled and kissed him on his nose before she climbed out of bed.
"Morning." he mumbled into the pillow he dragged over his face, thinking he'd be able to get another few minutes of sleep.
He was proven how wrong he was only 2 minutes later when a little whirlwind came running into the bedroom, started to bounce on the bed, and giggle loudly, "Daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy..."
Harm carefully peaked out from under the pillow and caught two tiny legs wrapped into white pjs with blue and yellow dots jumping up and down next to him.
"Daddy, up up up!" the small voice called, and a pair of hands dragged at the pillow over his head.
"Yeah, okay, I am up, sweetie." he groaned and sat up, pulling the little rugrat into his lap.
"Harm, have you seen Emerson?" he heard Mac call from the hallway.
Grinning down at the little girl in his arms, he replied, "She's here with me."
At 2 and a half years old, little Emerson Rose Rabb already was the spitting image of her mother - except for dark blue eyes, the same as her father's.
"How come you are awake before mommy woke you up, Emmie pie?" Harm asked his tiny daughter as he climbed out of bed.
"Tsaden made noise." Emerson replied and lifted her hands in the air. "Fwy me, daddy!"
With a big smile on his face, he picked her up and lifted her high in the air above his head, making airplane noises as he carried her out of the bedroom.
"Emmie Air coming!" the girl giggled joyfully.
"Prepare for landing, Emmie Air 221." Harm called as they neared Mac who was standing in the doorway to Emerson's room. "Runway mommy is cleared for landing."
With a sounds of 'woosh' the girl landed right in her mother's waiting arms.
"You go ahead into the bathroom first." she said to her husband and turned to enter Emerson's room. "You have exactly 20 minutes, then the kids are yours!"
"Got it!"
In 20 minutes, Harm showered, shaved and got dressed. This had become daily routine years ago already. When he emerged the bathroom, he found his two sons - still dressed in pjs - running up and down the hallway, the younger one chasing after the older one.
"Whoohoo, slow there." he uttered sternly and reached out to catch his younger son who was about to hit his older brother. "Jaden Matthew Rabb!"
The 4 year old boy looked up at his father, immediately sticking out his lower lip to flash his best puppy dog look.
"He hit me, daddy!" 6 year old Jonathan Harmon Rabb pouted.
"Why did you hit your brother, Jaden? And why are you still in your pjs?"
"He said me bad names." the younger boy replied. "And, and, and, mommy is with Emmie cause she was crying cause Jonah was saying her bad names as well."
"Jonah?" Jonah just shook his head no, pointing at his brother, "But, but, but he hit me!"
"Cause you said me bad names."
"Enough! Jaden, you will go help your mommy with Emerson. Jonah, you will come with me and we have a nice little talk about calling your little brother and sister bad names."
"But, but, but..." Jonah tried to object, but immediately grew quiet when Harm gave him a stern look and picked him up to carry him into the boys' room.
He placed him down on his bed, than sat down next to him.
"Okay, I want to know why you called your brother and your sister bad names. Why did you make Emerson cry?"
Jonah was fidgeting with the hem of his pjs, but didn't give Harm an answer. Sighing, Harm reached out towards Jonah's face and tilted it up to look at him.
"Why were you mean to Jaden and Emerson? What did they do to you?"
Finally, the boy broke out in his tears as he pulled out a broken toy plane from under his bed sheets.
"I said that they don't play with my toys, but they don't listen. They broke it."
Harm took the toy plane out of Jonah's hands and immediately realized that the plane he held in his hands had been very special for Jonah. He had taken him for his very first Tiger Cruise the summer before and Jonah had been so fascinated by the fighter jets that the CAG had given him a model of a F-14 - the plane his father used to fly. Now, it was missing a wing, and the tail end had broken off.
"How about daddy tries to fix this for you so it will look like new?"
"You can?"
"I will try my best. And in return you will promise me not to hit Jaden and Emerson anymore or call them bad names."
Jonah nodded silently before he handed his father the broken off tail and wing of the fighter jet. Harm smiled at his son, then placed a kiss on his forehead and left the room in search for his two younger children. Emerson he found in her room, fully dressed and occupied with a tea party for two of her dolls. Jaden he heard talking to Mac in the bathroom, so he knew that the younger ones were being taken care off. Jonah would be dressed by the time breakfast would be ready as well, so he decided to store the broken toy plane in his briefcase so he could take care of it during lunch break.
While being downstairs to gather his briefcase, he also turned on the coffee machine, then returned back upstairs to get his uniform jacket and see if the kids were ready for breakfast. He walked into the bedroom, but somehow couldn't find his jacket anywhere.
"Sarah, did you see my uniform jacket?" he called out to Mac who obviously was still busy in the bathroom.
"Placed it on the bed along with mine just a minute ago." she called back.
"No, they are not there!"
"But I placed them there!"
Harm shook his head as he searched the floor under the bed, but no sign of his jacket - or his wife's for that matter. They both were gone.
"Where the heck..." he mumbled and left the bedroom to see if maybe Mac had taken them to the bathroom with her instead of placing them on the bed like she said she did. Before he even could get to the bathroom, he caught a glimpse of his dark blue jacket vanishing in his daughter's room.
He peaked into the nursery and there he saw his daughter standing in the middle of her room wearing his uniform jacket.
"Emmie pie!" he laughed at the sight of his tiny daughter in his big jacket. "What are you doing?"
"I yike that. Wanna have one too."
Harm had to laugh even more as he picked her up.
"You want a Navy uniform? Why?"
"I wanna blue tsakeet, daddy. Gween tsakeet is eww."
"Uh oh, don't let your mommy hear that."
Turning around to carry Emerson out of her room to show Mac her choice of uniform, he had a perfect view into the boy's room on the opposite side of the hallway. There on his bed sat Jaden, dressed his mother's green Marine uniform jacket. The boy came running up to him, proud as he could be to show him his choice of uniform.
"Gween is eww." Emerson repeated and pointed at her older brother.
"No, blue is eww." Jaden objected.
"No, gween!"
"No, blue!"
"They are both not ew." Harm finished the discussion and picked up his son, carrying him on his other arm. Then he went back down the hallway.
"Sarah, you're not gonna believe this!" he chuckled as he lightly kicked with his foot against the bathroom door.
"What am I not gonna believe?" Mac asked and swung the door open. First she raised her eyebrows at her two youngest children, then started to laugh at the sight of both of them dressed in jackets that were way too large for them.
"Did you dress them like that?"
"No, they did it themselves."
"Gween tsakeet is..." Emerson started again, but Harm immediately shooshed her.
"A green jacket is what, Emmie pie?"
"Is eww." the girl finished.
Mac immediately gave Harm a look.
"No, no, no, don't look at me like that, I didn't tell her that."
"So?"
Mac took Jaden from Harm's arms, then turned to call for her older son.
"Jonah, time for breakfast!"
"Help! I am stuck!" Jonah called as he came toddling out of his room, one arm in his sweater, the other dangling through the neckhole together with half of his head.
Mac sighed and placed Jaden on the ground before she knelt down on the floor to help him. Shortly after, the boy was properly dressed in a grey sweater with big black letters that read 'Naval Academy Annapolis'.
"This is nice, I have squids all around me." Mac laughed and once again picked up Jaden to carry him downstairs.
"What's a squid, mommy?" Jaden asked innocently.
"Well, daddy is a squid because he is in the Navy and wearing blue."
"So I am not a squid because I am wearing green?"
"The ones wearing green are jarheads." Harm cut in with a grin on his face.
"I don't want to be a jarhead."
"And I no... no... no s.... I am Emmie!"
"Okay, kids, we need to talk about this."
Mac placed Jaden down on his kiddy chair while Harm did the same with Emerson. They both took their jackets from the kids and put them on while Jonah hopped on his chair on the other side of the table.
"I get dino pancake!" Emerson exclaimed and raised her arms in the air, adding a low 'pweeeze' when both her parents gave her a stern look.
"Before we have breakfast, we'll talk about blue and green uniforms."
"Gween is eww." Emerson once again shouted. "I no want gween."
"Okay, look, Emmie pie, daddy is wearing the blue because he is a sailor and flew from a carrier on sea." Mac tried to explain. "Mommy is wearing green because she didn't serve on ships but on land."
"So if you would have served on a ship, you would have had a blue uniform as well?" Jonah asked.
"Well, daddy would have a green uniform if he would have chosen not to fly from a carrier but from land."
"What mommy is trying to say is that no matter what color our uniform has, we are both very proud to serve our country." Harm explained.
"May it be from the water or from the land, it doesn't matter. Do you think you understand that?"
Jonah was the only one who nodded, but Jaden and Emerson just kept staring at them with wide eyes.
"Jaden, now, what's the difference between mommy's green uniform and daddy's blue uniform."
"Blue is eww." the boy answered immediately.
"Pumpkin, this is not about colors. Remember mommy has a blue uniform as well she puts on for very special occasions?"
Reluctantly, the little boy nodded at his father.
"You may not like the color of the uniform now, but when you are older, you will understand that you don't choose what you want to do by choosing the color. Everyone who is wearing a uniform, blue, white, green, grey, they didn't choose that uniform because they liked the color. They chose it because they want to serve their country. Different uniforms mean a different way of serving your country. Daddy chose the Navy because that was what he wanted to do. Go to sea and fly planes. I didn't say I wanted that uniform, I said I wanted to fly and took that uniform as a result of it. Do you understand that, Jaden?"
"Uh huh," Jaden nodded, "if the Navy had green, you would have taken green as well."
"I would have taken pink if the Navy had pink uniforms. And I guess mommy would have taken any other uniform color as well if the Marines had a different color than green."
"Can have pink tsakeet, daddy?" Emerson cut in.
"There are no pink uniforms, cutie pie." Mac replied with a chuckle and handed her daughter a toddler cup with orange juice.
"What do you want to do when you are big girl, Emmie?"
"Emmie Air! Wanna fwy!"
"Well, there are also Marine fighter pilots." "
You are way too optimistic there, Marine. She chose the blue jacket."
"Yeah, but you just told them that the color doesn't matter, remember? So if she wants to fly, she can take the green uniform as well. It's just a matter of belief."
"What's the grey uniform for?" Jonah asked.
"Air Force." Harm and Mac replied at the same time.
"Can I fly planes with the Air Force as well?"
Harm and Mac looked at each other with a disgusted look.
"And we'll be adding a fourth to that bunch in 6 months, heaven help!"
